Rynlee tripped over a tree root. Her textbooks spilled out of her arms, landing right next to a mud puddle. She bent over to pick them up and then stood to see someone standing next to her.

“Cherylt,” she was surprised to see the other Purator here. “How have you been?”

She shrugged. “Fine. Look, I came to ask if you wanted to pair up with me for the mission next week.”

“What mission?”

Cherylt raised her eyebrows. “They never told you? The first-years are supposed to join my second-year class. There's a demon spotted just north of Vladra. Since that isn’t too far away, the High Purator wanted to take all the first-years along. I thought your teacher would have told you at your first class today.”

“I’m sure she did tell the class…” Rynlee said sheepishly. “But I wasn’t there.”

“You know, it’s much easier to get away with skipping class if you have a buddy and take turns ditching. That way you can tell each other what you missed and never not know something you’re supposed to know.”

“Um, thanks?” Rynlee couldn’t help but grin. Cherylt didn’t seem like the kind of girl to skip a lot of class, but she was smart enough if she wanted to.

“So will you be my partner? If we don’t pick someone by the end of the day, the teacher’s pick for you.”

“Sure.”

Cherylt put one arm around her shoulders and squeezed. “You’re the best.”

“Is there someone you’re trying to avoid again?”

“No.” Cherylt looked disappointed that Rynlee would assume she only picked her to avoid someone. “I was thinking about what you did for me the other day, and wanted to repay you. Now you won’t be stuck with Rohn.”

Rynlee laughed. She definitely did not want to be stuck with Rohn. “Then thank you.”

“Were you on your way to a class? Because if not, then we can get a head start on mission preparation. There’s a lot to learn, and you’d be ahead of everyone else in your year if I can help.”

“No, I was on my way to just study in the library.” Rynlee lied. Surely, this was more important than going to another magical healing class. If she went, she'd just watch and listen without being able to do any of the assignments. “I’d love your help.”

Cherylt smiled at her. “C’mon, let’s go to my room. I think I still have some of the stuff I used when I was in my first year. It’s mostly stuff like a handbook on official Purator law during battle, what to do in certain situations, how orders and rankings work, and such.”

Once they got up to Cherylt’s bedroom, Rynlee wondered why she hadn’t reached out to this girl before. They already seemed to be fast friends, and that was something Rynlee could have used many months ago. Somehow it seemed the more she failed at learning magic, the more good friends she found. First Senn after that traumatic healing class, and now Cherylt. Rynlee was dreading her first mission.

“What do you think it will be like?” she asked, wanting to know as much as possible before they left.
